Reports and Correspondence
Anne Stephenson-Street Light sub-committee report: Has begun the inventory of the Town of South Berwick. She is still waiting on some pieces of information to be completed. There are 214 street lights in South Berwick, most are high pressure sodium, the most efficient next to LED, so the payback takes longer. She is recommending a mapping to see if any to turn off in addition to refinancing. Delivery charges (getting the light hooked up to the grid) for each streetlight are high in comparison to the charge for the kilowatts used. Would be good to know what the delivery charge for LED would be. Anne is working on getting the inventory completed and submitted to the Town Manager / Council so that this committee can have it for the next meeting.
Molly Colman gave update on the website subcommittee. They met and mapped out the basic menu items for the website. Molly will send assignments and an idea for a template. Anne Stephenson will work on energy audits and air quality. John Rudolph will start working on some case studies. Molly will send an idea for a template for the case studies.
Bobbi attended the Kittery Energy Meeting. It was lead by the town manager. They were discussing the wind turbine that did not work out. Apparently they are looking at another type of wind turbine that goes up in the air, similar to a kite.
Anne Stephenson went on a tour of the cogeneration at Kittery Town Hall. It was quite interesting and Anne recommends that Town Manager and Terry Oliver go to take a tour. Fueled on natural gas, makes heat and then spins from waste heat to make electricity.
Roberta Beavers mentioned the Green Alliance, a card that gives a discount to green businesses.
Roberta Beavers and George Muller went to the Green IT meeting. Saw some low impact printers that use wax rather than toner. Learned about e-waste option in Jaffrey, NH.
George Muller brought up the list from Interfaith Power and Light. Discussed the idea of reaching out to churches.
Public Comment
Nora Irvine presented her idea for an energy and weatherization fair. When the Rotary and Green up did weatherization last year they realized how much people don’t know. Vicki Desilets brought up the idea of a weatherization fair at the community center, perhaps at the end of August. There are still some weatherization kits, only of which some were used last year. Would like to get these into people’s hands. Is asking if this committee would like to be involved.
Committee discussion re: energy fair idea: Perhaps a two step process. First would be a session about how to do a do-it-yourself weatherization audit. Then there would be a session with some demonstrations of how to do weatherization and also some information about how to get financing and assistance for weatherization. Perhaps collaborate with Marshwood Adult Ed. Perhaps do it at Marshwood High School and at the Community Center. The SBEEAC will provide information for the sessions.
Unfinished Business
1. Discuss upcoming joint meeting of southern York County energy committees scheduled for July 20.- John Rudoph has been having conversations with Nancy Farron who is head of the CWC and who has been organizing the KEYS energy committees to meet together. Next week will be a meeting with Paul Schumacher and Tom Reinhauer and Rob Brown from Opportunity Maine. John Rudolph will attend that meeting. Possible 4 project ideas that have been discussed: 1) putting solar PV on some homes; 2) solar thermal; 3) route 236 traffic reduction project—build new park & rides and work with employers; and 4) street light reduction.. Consensus of the committee is that 3) route 236 traffic reduction is the priority area and the second would be 4) street light reduction.
2. Discuss short, medium and long term goal- we will put this at the top of the next meeting’s agenda.
3. Discuss questionnaire for local businesses- not addressed at this meeting.
