The Town of South Berwick accepts applications for open vacancies. Police Department

RESERVE TRAFFIC CONTROL.  The primary purpose is to ensure the safety of school children and pedestrians while crossing the street. The second purpose is to simultaneously regulate traffic entrance and egress from the Central School parking lot.  This is a safety sensitive position.

Work is performed in an outdoor environment subject to exposure weather conditions of hot or cold and extreme conditions of inclement weather. Exposed to the hazards associated with working on/in busy streets and intersections. Regulates traffic from Street Crossing to Central School entrance/exit to regulate traffic on an as needed basis and coordinates traffic with traffic officer at the intersection of Route 4 and 236 through assessing traffic flow at that intersection visually.  Must maintain constant awareness of surroundings as work is performed while standing mid-street with an expected passage of 2,000 vehicles during the two hour shifts.  Errors in judgment could result in serious injury to the employee and/ or the general public and create hazards to public safety.

Must be able to direct traffic for periods of up to two hours without a break in busy street environment and be capable of covering a distance of 50’ in order to accommodate crosswalk pedestrians and traffic.  Full range arm and hand movements are essential.

PART TIME DISPATCH.  The primary purpose of this role is to provide emergency and non-emergency dispatching services and clerical work supporting the Town of South Berwick's public safety operations using the radio equipment, typing, and records preparation.  Must have excellent communication skills and have a sophisticated degree of persuasiveness to influence the behavior of others.  Must be able to maintain professionalism in challenging situations.

NCIC and METRO Ceritification is mandatory.  Certification in E-911 through the State of Maine is mandatory.  Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification is highly desired.  Completion of Terminal Operator Certification Course is mandatory.

Fire Department


The purpose of this position is to protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties for theSouth Berwick Fire Department; all other related work as required.  The Firefighter is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.

Public Works


This position includes snow plowing and removal as well as other labor tasks.  Knowledge of safety rules and regulations is important.  This position is open approximately November to April.  Aplican should be available for weather and non-weather related emergencies.  Other duties include performing skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled manual work assisting in construction, maintenance and repair projects for the Public Works Department including maintenance and construction of streets, sidewalks, storm drains and sewers, snow and ice control and/or removal, refuse collection and other related tasks.  Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment.  Operates heavy and light equipment of moderate complexity including snow plows and sanding equipment, heavy dump trucks, hand and power tools and roadside mowers.  Occasionally may fill in on Roll-Off Truck.  Must be willing to work as a laborer when needed.  Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with a clean driving record and have a high school diploma or equivalency and three years of related experience.  Hourly wage is $15.00/hr.


This position is reserve only on an as - needed basis.  Duties include winter maintenance, snow plowing and removal, salting and general labor tasks.  Knowledge of safety rules and regulations is important.  Applicant should be available for weather and non-weather related emergencies. A valid drivers license with a clean driving record is required.  Hourly wage is $14.18/hr.


This position is reserve only on an as - needed basis.  Duties include assisting with winter maintenance including shoveling.  Applicant should be available for weather and non-weather related emergencies.  Hourly wage is $11.65/hr.

Transfer Station

This position has no regular scheduled hours and is on an as needed basis.  The Transfer Station is open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday each week.  The majority of the work is performed outdoors.

Successful candidates for the Transfer Station must be at least 21 years old, be reliable, able to lift up to 50 lbs, work independently and have an effective working relationship with the public.  Base wage starts at $13.49 based on experience.  Applications available on line at or at the Transfer Station (207) 384-3309 or Town Hall (207) 384-3013 or email resume to or deliver to 180 Main Street 2nd Floor in South Berwick.

Public Library



Pre-School Program Instructor - Pee Wee Soccer Program

This position prepares and coaches all aspects of presenting various games and fundamentals of soccer.  It introduces the basics of the sport through activities and fun game-like challenges and skill building.  This program encourages all children to actively participate in fun, fitness, soccer drills and games.

Experience working with young children in game-like settings preferred but not required.  Schedule is currently one day a week September through October for morning and afternoon schedules.  Schedule may be flexible based on the successful candidate.  The program is planned for four (4) weeks but could be extended up to twelve (12) weeks with the right individual.  This position is instrumental in maintaining this important program for our youth.  

The hourly wage is $11.00.
