The Town of South Berwick accepts applications for open vacancies. The Deputy Tax Collector has the following primary responsibilities: ~Administers the collection of all monies due the Town, posts payments, balances and prepares schedule of receipts, makes bank deposits, assists with daily cash-up of business receipts, researches and prepares municipal lien certificates, prepares legal documentation, processes abatements and supplements, prepares bills for real estate, personal property and motor vehicle excise tax, issues demands for delinquent accounts and processes tax title property information, and mails bills.  This position also field inquiries from various interested parties, prepares weekly payroll, related reports, submits 941 Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return and other payroll related duties.  Assists with accounting duties

  • Associate’s degree in related field or work experience required.
  • At least three (3) of progressively-responsible tax collection or payroll experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of of organization, operations, and procedures of municipal government. – Experience working in a municipality or government entity preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of office administration, financial record keeping and automated office systems.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications for financial management - expertise with Northern Data software preferred.
  • Experience in managing payroll and employee benefit programs preferred.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records and carry out work assignments independently.
  • Adept in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products including Word, Excel, Outlook, and database software.
  • Sound judgment and decision making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to handle conflict with the public.
  • Customer Service Skills and maintain professionalism even when interrupted.
  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

SOUTH BERWICK Transfer Station has an immediate opening for a Reserve/On-Call Transfer Station Attendant.  This position has no regular scheduled hours and is on an as needed basis.  The Transfer Station is open on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday each week.  The majority of the work is performed outdoors.

The successful candidate must be at least 21 years old, be reliable, able to lift up to 50 lbs, work independently and have an effective working relationship with the public.  Base wage starts at $13.42 based on experience.  Applications available on line at or at the Transfer Station (207) 384-3309 or Town Hall (207) 384-3300 or email resume to or deliver to 180 Main Street 2nd Floor in South Berwick.
