Recreation Committee 12/15/2009
SOUTH BERWICK RECREATION COMMITTEE
COMMUNITY CENTER
REGULAR MEETING
DECEMBER 15, 2009

1)      Accepted minutes of previous meeting 11/17/09.

2)      Youth Center Barn
John Schempf values amount of time put into Youth Center.  See what money is
available (T. Oliver) to put into barn.  Louise will have to provide use with money figures for revenue.  Need more exacts from Louise Cole.
-  What are her bills?  Heat, water & plowing.
-  Barn – what does town do for it?
-  Louise tried to “up” her dues & people opted out.  She charges now $35/year.

3)      Community Center
-  What can go on here with other groups?
-  Do seniors pay to use Community Center space?  No.

4)      Molly Colman – visitsouthberwick.com
Overview – How can town & groups benefit from her website?  She also has 236diner.com people trying to find out town info.  The “236diner” is a little like a blog.  Then Molly made www.discoversouthberwick.com which is an online business & community directory that has stationary info. (facts about town, activities, etc.)
-  We needed a master schedule online to help plan events.  Molly put info. on a google calendar.  Then it automatically feeds it to www.discoversouthberwick.com & the 236diner.com
-  Do you get paid for this?  Molly is going to start selling ads to get some money.
-  The town’s website is not connected to Molly’s site.
-  Town groups must give Molly flyers as much in advance as possible.  Also, we must find a rep. from each group (MSAD 35, adult ed., Powderhouse, etc.) to load up information directly onto the calendar (so Molly doesn’t have to do it herself).

5)      Patti Mitchem from Friends of the Library visits with the Council.
-  Len Bogh – Our interest is with the basement
-  Patti – Currently the basement is not in the design
-  This is a town project
-  There are three scenarios to be recommended to the town/5,000 sq. ft. is not enough             space.
-  There is ground work for fundraising but there is no fundraising yet.
-  Need design before know amount of money.
-  Mold in basement is at a level that needs to be handled – it can be controlled.
-  Town Council - $40,000 to clean-being discussed and investigated.
-  There is money to take care of the asbestos-grant money too.
-  $200,000 comprehensively to do all the work that needs to be done.
-  Want to keep inside of the building-beams, etc.
-  Need as much money as we can raise-there is not much raised as of yet.
-  The 5,000 sq. ft. of interior does not allow for a meeting space-that is a concern.
-  If the basement was fixed it could be used.  Keep the kitchen!
-  There needs to be more money if the basement is to be fixed.
-  No particular reason why the basement not incorporated.
-  Even another group/organization could have that space.
-  Having the basement used does blend with the Friends of the Library’s vision.
-  Idea has always been there to use basement-as plans evolve, there is time to plan for its use.
-  If the main floors need to be bolstered, do the architects have plans where the basement ends up having beams-the architects could answer that.
-  The 3 designs/scenarios will be for January.
-  Mold can be done anytime-probably not happen until the spring.
-  Town Manager, Town Council, Building Committee needs to know/be aware of what the Recreation Board is thinking about the basement space.
-  Send email to Town Manager and cc Roberta Orsini so they know of our interest.
-  Email library too of our interest.
-  Overall, we are trying to find a place in town that we, the Recreation Department, feels is ours to hold programs.
-  Need to ask Town Manager:  Does this money need to be for capital use or can it be used for maintenance?  Is maintenance line item that was voted out during Council meeting?
