Recreation Committee 3/9/2010
SOUTH BERWICK RECREATION COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
MARCH 9, 2010

1)  Accepted minutes for meeting of January 26, 2010

2)  Old Business
        - Reviewed various needs of the groups who have visited us throughout this winter.
        - Sharon shared information Terry Oliver shared with her about various expenses related to      recreation.

3)  New Business
        - Sue Godel from Children’s Leadership Council.
        - Sue shared brief history of the Council and the creation of the playground by the Fire
              Dept.
        - Sue mentioned people still call her about the fact that the playground needs to be
           mowed.
        - The playground is a gift to the Town.  The Town owns it.
        - It does need to be mowed and have chips provided by the Town.
        - The Council may give sand from its Sand Art Fundraiser.

Bill Page – The Town Council could have a volunteer Action Committee.  It could take care of some of the donated places/items that need upkeep.  Kid/child safe wood chips are needed.  The chips are needed, 12 inch depth; if not and there is an accident, the playground could be a liability.
Sharon – Bringing back the Used Toy Sale would be neat as a fundraiser again.
        -  The group (the Council) has been dormant for awhile.
        - Mulch can be made at the Transfer Station and brought to the playground.
        - Sandbox was added to the playground after Sue was not as active.  She would not have
          had it.
        -  The Council might offer sand and a volunteer pick up/ clean up day.  Sand for sand
           idea.
Sharon wants to know if the Council wants to help with a skating rink/benches.  Yes!  The Council does not want to be involved with a porta-potty.
Bill – A municipal skating rink is a huge undertaking.
        -  Sharon asked for $4,800 from the Vaughan Fund for the portable skate rink.
        -  Jeff Howarth will snow blow it.
        -  Fire Dept. might be willing to care for it.
        -  The Council needs active members.
        -  Yes, can use high school students for volunteers/community service.
        -  Need a mission that is new.
        -  Can be for all children, not just preschoolers.
        -  The Council would like to have another community discussion meeting.
        -  There is a need for a new leader for the Council.

Len Bogh – Frisbee golf in Town Forest; this would help create a mission for the Council.

- The 1st Cardbox Derby at Powderhouse Hill was a great event despite lack of snow.
- Bill thanked Sharon for her help.

Next meeting is at the Barn on April 6, 2010.
