Facilities

Everyone is welcome to visit and use the library during our open hours for any purpose that is compatible with regular library service.  We are have comfortable chairs for conversation or study, tables for individual or group work, laptop carrels, play spaces, and more.  Residents and visitors are always welcome in the building and it is handicap accessible.  There are public computer stations, laptops that can be used in the building, a copy machine that will scan to email and Wi-Fi is available inside and on the library grounds.

  • Full Spectrum Light Stations for Treating S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
  • Mobility aids to borrow such as a wheelchair, knee stroller, walker and crutches.
These spaces are also available:

Study Room:  This small space has a door and can accommodate up to six people at a table.

Community Room: This room may be reserved for meetings, gatherings or workshops. Food is allowed in this area. Please call the library if you wish to use a room.  Use of a Town of South Berwick facility after hours is subject to restrictions including proof of insurance to cover an event, and the cost and availability of town employees to staff the building during the event.

Quiet Spaces

The Balcony:  This beautiful area has comfortable seating and tables and is restricted to people under 10 unless they are with an adult.  It is not handicap accessible.

The Reading Room: The non-fiction and local history area has tables, carrels and a large print reader.

The Library has 6 public computer stations, including PCs and iMacs that may be used by any visitor over 7 years of age.

There are also 4 laptops that may be used within the building by visitors.

Children 7 and under may use a computer if accompanied by a parent.

Wi-Fi

Wireless internet access is available throughout the library and on the grounds.

E-Readers

The library has three NOOK e-readers that may be checked out of the library and taken home.

Flat Screen Monitor for Use for Gaming & Casting

  • Share content on your laptop on a bigger screen for a small group.
  • Bring in your game box and headsets and have fun with your friends.
Scanning to Email

Use the printer to scan a page and send it to an email address.

Video Editing and Animating

27 inch screen iMacs have professional grade Apple software Final Cut Pro and Motion for use in video-editing.  These machines also have Animationish software for creating animations and cartoons. Time may be reserved at these stations.  Users should plan to bring a flash drive to store their work. Learn more about the video editing workstations.

This service has been purchased and sponsored by the Friends of the South Berwick Public Library.

Guidelines for Use

  • Computer time for video-editing projects is 2 hours
  • Time slots for video-editing and animation may be reserved ahead by people age 14 & up, anyone younger may use the service on a first come first served basis.
  • Use of these services must comply with the South Berwick Public Library Internet Use Policy
  • The IMacs have no DVD/CD drive so digital work must be downloaded via a flash drive device
  • Video-editing sessions end 30 minutes before the Library closes
  • Video projects may be stored on an open external hard drive for up to 2 months or a flash drive may be purchased at cost ($7.99) from the library.  There can be no expectation of privacy for work stored on library hardware and the library is not responsible for its security in any way.
  • Please sign in at the Main Desk for computer time and to pick up the wireless keyboard and mouse.

People who are recovering from injuries or visiting and need accommodation, can borrow recovery equipment.    The library catalog lists a full description of each device and the loan period is flexible.

There are two light therapy stations at the library.  These full spectrum lights can help treat seasonal affective disorder(SAD) which is a type of depression that some people experience in the winter months when they don’t have sufficient exposure to sunlight.

During light therapy, you sit or work near a device called a light therapy box. The box gives off bright light that mimics natural outdoor light.

Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood and sleep, easing SAD symptoms. Using a light therapy box may also help with other types of depression, sleep disorders and other conditions.

Come in and read or do some hand work while you let the light shine.

A light box is available for use in the library.

The 19″ x 26″ flat illuminated surface can be used  to:
